About ICMA
Fairbanks, Alaska is built on a rich history of music that reflects the community’s deep commitment to the arts. Programs like the Native Fiddlers, String Symposium, String Fling, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Camp have long played a vital role in shaping generations of musicians and music lovers. However, challenges such as the retirement of experienced educators, fiscal declines, and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted these traditions.
These factors have limited opportunities for K-12 students and local musicians to develop their skills and passion for music, which impacts the broader community. The decline in music education weakens the cultural fabric of Fairbanks, where music has long been a vital part of local life. Indeed, there is a need to reinvigorate the stellar and diverse music traditions that have so enriched Fairbanks and beyond!

International Chamber Music Alaska (ICMA) strives to bring our tradition back through chamber music! We aim to create a vibrant environment where students from diverse backgrounds can enhance their skills, explore innovative repertoire, and connect with mentors and peers. Our mission is to foster a passion for chamber music and cultivate a supportive community that inspires creativity, discipline, and lifelong learning in the heart of Alaska.
The International Chamber Music Alaska Summer Intensive, is a dynamic seven-day chamber music intensive that will be held annually. This year is set from August 10-16, 2025 on the beautiful campus of University of Alaska Fairbanks. This unique program is designed for a wide range of participants, including young artists, intermediate students aiming to become professionals, and dedicated amateur adults. This program will offer an immersive experience in which musicians of all ages and skill levels can enhance their chamber music abilities through a variety of activities.
Throughout the intensive, participants will receive small ensemble coachings, working side by side with renowned faculty members from prominent international universities and conservatories who provide personalized guidance on technique, interpretation, and ensemble collaboration. In addition to chamber music coachings, the program will offer specialized workshops on topics such as performance techniques, musicianship, and repertoire, as well as masterclasses led by distinguished guest artists, such as Philip Setzer, a member of the 9-time Grammy winning Emerson String Quartet.
